What Happens After You Submit to Turnitin
You clicked submit. Now what — when does the report exist, who sees it, can you resubmit, and where does your paper live afterward? The timeline has a few stages worth knowing before finals week.
The timeline, stage by stage
- Upload & processing — Turnitin generates the similarity report within minutes for most papers (first-time submissions); peak periods can take longer. The AI writing indicator is generated alongside the similarity analysis.
- Report availability — whether you see it depends on assignment settings: post-date, instructor visibility choices, and whether student view is enabled at all. Some courses never show students the report directly.
- Instructor review — your instructor opens Feedback Studio, sees both scores plus the match list, and annotates. This is where a yellow similarity or elevated AI number becomes a conversation — or doesn't.
- Repository storage — unless the assignment uses no-repository mode, your submitted text is stored and will match against future submissions (including your own revisions — the classic self-match trap).
- Resubmission — if allowed, resubmissions typically re-generate reports (with cooldowns that vary by license). Beware: if your draft is already stored, the final version may match your draft heavily.
What you control before clicking submit
- Pre-check both scores privately — AI patterns with our free no-login detector; similarity you can estimate by reviewing your quoting and citation hygiene.
- Fix flagged lines — the 5-step workflow; citations stay untouched.
- Keep every draft — version history is your best friend if anything is ever questioned (the playbook).
